July 2023 – Representatives of entities linked to the tobacco supply chain had a meeting with the minister of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro, in Brasília, on this Wednesday, July 12. The president of the Interstate Tobacco Industry Union (SindiTabaco), Iro Schünke, was a member of the delegation that addresses themes of interest to the sector, particularly, the 10th Conference of the Parties (COP 10), organized by the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). Schünke stressed the importance of having the Ministry of Agriculture taking active part in the discussions in preparation to COP 10, scheduled for November, in Panama, which could possibly have a direct impact on the supply chain.

“Brazil is the top exporter of tobacco worldwide and has occupied this position for 30 years now, and is the second largest producer. For this leadership role, Brazil should be a protagonist in defending a crop that contributes decisively to the socioeconomic progress of several cities, especially in the South Region of the Country. Historically the Ministry of Agriculture has been an ally of the productive sector within this context, because it has a good grasp of the impacts of the directives coming from the FCTC could have on the thousands of people who derive their livelihood from this crop, which is processed and exported. This is the stance we again expect from the Ministry”, emphasized Schünke, who also attends this Thursday, April 13, the agenda with the Minister of Agrarian Development (MDA), Paulo Teixeira, at 3:30 p.m.

Along with the SindiTabaco, the meeting was also attended by the president of the Tobacco Growers’ Association of Brazil (Afubra), Benício Albano Werner; by the executive director of the Brazilian Tobacco Industry Association (Abifumo), Giuseppe Lobo; by the executive director of the Association of the Tobacco Growing Municipalities (AmproTabaco), Guido Hoff; the president of FETAG-RS, Carlos Joel da Silva; the president of the Tobacco Sectoral Chamber, Romeu Schneider; and the mayor of Santa Cruz do Sul, Helena Hermany.
