21 . SEP . 2021 Releases

September 2021 – Reelected for the sixth consecutive term of office, Iro Schünke continues presiding over the Interstate Tobacco Industry Union SindiTabaco. The election took place in early September, at the head office of the entity, in Santa Cruz do Sul (RS), with only one candidate, and the directors of the 2021-2024 term of office were also elected. Besides Schünke, the board of directors is composed of the following members: Edenir Gassen, secretariat vice-president; Flavio Marques Goulart, finance vice-president; Valmor Thesing, Industrial Affairs vice-president; Roberto Naue, Fiscal Affairs vice-president; Paulo Cezar Favero, Tobacco Production and Quality vice-president; and Guatimozin de Oliveira Santos Filho, vice-president of Environmental Management and Social Responsibility.

The new board of directors will take office on October 22. According to Iro Schünke, who has been presiding over the entity since 2006, the next term of office is supposed to give continuity to the work which has been going on in the defense of the tobacco supply chain.  “We consider all matters of common interest to our associate members, with an eye on strengthening the supply chain as a whole”, he says. “Our major goals are the regulatory matters, social and environmental responsibility and visibility of the sector”, the official complements.

Within this context, the Union has been keeping a close watch on all matters relative to the Framework Convention, and pioneered programs in the social and environmental areas. Examples include the Empty Pesticide Container Collection Program and incentive to reforestation and direct planting. Initiatives relative to child labor were highly encouraged with the foundation of the Growing Up Right Institute, which came as an entrepreneurial wake up call to hundreds of adolescents in the rural settings.

Furthermore, the SindiTabaco encourages rural diversification, through such actions as the Corn, Bean and Pastureland after Tobacco Harvest Program. “Our work is totally transparent, as this is the model that we are trying to strengthen, and will continue guiding our activities in areas that impact upon the life of those who earn a livelihood from this agribusiness segment”, he stresses.
