Tobacco sector program ‘proper disposal of empty pesticide containers’ has been in operation for two decades

4 . MAR . 2022 Releases

March 2022 – Tobacco growers in 26 municipalities in South Rio Grande do Sul are eligible to take part in the Empty Pesticide Container Collection Program, from March 7 to May 19.The move is part of a pioneer initiative by the Interstate Tobacco Industry Union (SindiTabaco) and associate companies, in partnership with the Tobacco Growers’ Association of Brazil (Afubra), and now benefits 113 thousand tobacco growers and covers 395 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina.

In the view of SindiTabaco president Iro Schünke, this is one of the various examples in which the sector puts ESG into practice, acronym that stands for Environmental, Social and Governance), a set of practices that evaluate a firm’s collective consciousness for social and environmental factors.

“The pesticide collection program was created before legislation now in force, with the purpose to preserve the environment and farmers’ health and safety through proper disposal of empty pesticide packaging. There is also strong recommendation for the farmers to rinse the containers three times before storing them in appropriate places. Everything in a comfortable manner, as the collection sites are all located close to the rural properties, thus avoiding extensive travel”, Schünke comments.

In operation for 21 years, the program has turned into a reference for other sectors in reverse logistics and has already collected 18 million pieces. “Of the containers collected, 93% are destined for recycling, giving origin to other plastic products, especially for the civil construction sector. The remaining containers, in no condition to be recycled, are taken to licensed landfills, supervised by competent organs”, comments program coordinator Carlos Sehn.
